We are a special parent/carer and pre-school children group based at Bettridge. We meet every Thursday from 10.00am in our Community Room for socialisation, play and a chat. At 11.00am we go together to the hydrotherapy pool where we introduce our children to the water, the emphasis being on confidence building and fun. We have some group activities, rhymes and songs led by a member of our school staff and parents/carers can join in with these at the pace of their child. We need to change and leave the pool by 12.00 noon.
The group is open to any pre-school child with learning delay or other disability, as long as they are accompanied in the water by their parent/carer or adult family member. At present there is no waiting list, but we will need to keep the group small to ensure the quality of provision.
The water is warmer and quieter than the average swimming pool and a range of toys and flotation aids are available to explore and try out.
A Swimming Instructor who is a qualified lifeguard is always present and a Teaching Assistant who is experienced with pre-school and special needs children is available each session.
It is suggested that if a child receives help from a physiotherapist, their advice is sought regarding particular activities that may be beneficial in the pool. Assistance can be given with these.
In order to ensure the safety and hygiene of our pool, we operate a ‘double nappy system’, i.e. a re-usable swimming nappy with a concealed waterproof layer, like a pair of plastic pants within the nappy with: a disposable swimming nappy under the re-usable swim nappy. If you are not sure what you will need, please ask when you first contact us – we have some samples in school that you can look at.
For more information, please ring school with your enquiry leaving your contact details and we will arrange for the Teaching Assistant to get in touch with you.
